Plitvice Lakes
Plitvice Lakes National Park is a magnificent natural wonder, renowned as one of the world’s most stunning national parks. Encompassing an area of 296 km², the park features 16 interconnected lakes that are joined by streams and waterfalls, set amidst a picturesque landscape of oak forests, meadows, rocks, and lakes. Divided into two sections, the upper area comprises 12 lakes, while the lower area contains four lakes, with a drop of around 100 meters from the highest to the lowest lake.
In 1979, the park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, thanks to its breathtaking scenery, which is further enhanced by the abundance of waterfalls, green lakes, and gorges that provide an awe-inspiring spectacle. The colors of the autumn foliage add to the park’s natural beauty, creating a truly enchanting setting that is almost beyond words.
Visitors can explore the park by taking leisurely walks along the lakes, traveling by electric train, or by electric boat. There are also higher trails that offer stunning views of the park, providing visitors with different perspectives and a better understanding of the park’s vast size.
While the park is open all year round, it is advisable to visit in the spring or fall, as these off-season periods provide a more comfortable climate and fewer crowds. In the spring, the water levels are higher due to melting snow, and fall offers a breathtaking display of changing foliage colors. During winter, the park is covered in snow, creating a serene and peaceful ambiance that is hard to match.
Visitors should plan ahead and bring a picnic lunch to enjoy while admiring the beautiful lakes, as the food inside the park can be overpriced. Although swimming is not allowed due to its UNESCO World Heritage status, visitors can rent small row boats to enjoy the serene waters of the lakes.
Finally, visitors should be prepared to take hundreds of photographs, as every step offers a different perspective of the park’s incredible beauty, making it a truly memorable experience.
